Following Brexit, travel policies to the United Kingdom have changed. Here are the key details every traveler needs to know:
- Mandatory Passport: All passengers must present a valid passport. National identity cards are no longer accepted. Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the UK; no additional validity period is required.
- Advance Passenger Information (API): The UK government requires passengers to provide passport details before traveling. You can easily enter this information in the "Manage your booking" section on the Eurostar website.
- Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA): Starting April 2, 2025, EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens will need an ETA for short stays in the UK. This digital permit will cost £10, be valid for 2 years, and can be applied for starting March 5, 2025.
- Border Controls: EU citizens now undergo more rigorous checks when entering the UK, which may increase processing times at Eurostar stations. It’s advisable to arrive well in advance to ensure a smooth journey.
- Entry/Exit System (EES): The EU’s EES, replacing passport stamps with biometric checks, is expected to be implemented in 2025. This may affect processing times at Schengen area borders for travelers entering or exiting.
- eGates: If you have a biometric passport, you can use eGates at Eurostar stations for faster border clearance. However, additional checks may apply with the EES implementation.
Preparation Tips: Ensure your passport is valid, complete API requirements, apply for an ETA if necessary, and arrive at the station with ample time for checks. Stay informed about travel policy updates before your journey for a hassle-free experience.
